Care-AI Network består foruden Professionshøjskolen Absalon af Kiel University of Applied Sciences, Digitale Wirtschaft Schleswig-Holstein, PCT digital GmbH og Danish Life Science Cluster.

Ny projektmodel giver bedre udgangspunkt

New project idea must secure the future of elderly care in Denmark and Germany

The elderly care, bordering Denmark and Germany, must be secured for the future and a new project idea is now set. A network led by University College Absalon, Kiel University of Applied Sciences, and Danish Life Science Cluster amongst others has included municipalities, companies, and other partners in the development of the new project idea. This co-creation contributes to even more relevance and sustainability.

Artificial intelligence can become a valuable tool in future elderly care. Several parties have therefore joined to develop a project idea to investigate how artificial intelligence can add the most value in German and Danish elderly care. The project idea is developed by the Care-AI Network with Community College Absalon as the lead.

The Network has held several workshops including 15 municipalities and several companies. Furthermore, both a Danish and a German health cluster have provided input for the project idea.

– We have been completely open at the workshops and asked about the challenges within the municipalities. Therefore, we are now ready to start the writing of a project with high practice relevance, building on the employees’ needs and including the municipalities’ political strategies, states project leader, Ulla Skjødt from The Centre of Nursing at University College Absalon, lead-partner on Care-AI.

Alongside The University College Absalon, the Care-AI Network also consists of Kiel University of Applied Sciences, Digital Wirtschaft Schleswig-Holstein, PCT digital GmbH, and Danish Life Science Cluster.

The new project model provides a better starting point

The process of developing the project idea has been navigated by a model for network projects, which is a new tool, created by EU Interreg Deutschland-Danmark. The model has made it possible to form the network with potential project partners from the public and private sectors to investigate needs, market, and potential. The network has held three workshops.

– A project like this must stay relevant for many years and it is, therefore, crucial that we are able to analyze the needs and potential of the entire ecosystem. We have had the opportunity to gather the needs from several municipalities, and companies and knowledge institutions have provided input on the potential, states Karen Lindegaard, project leader and international coordinator in Danish Life Science Cluster.

As relevant and close to operation as possible

Aabenraa municipality is one of 15 that has provided input on the upcoming project on AI in elderly care and how it can turn out.

– We ensure that the project will result in activities accustomed to our needs when we, as a municipality, are allowed to join the development stage. We can be a part of shaping the project and hereby making it as relevant and close to our daily operation as possible. Which, obviously, is an advantage, states Theresa Bahnsen Jepsen, development consultant, Aabenraa Municipality.

Important input from SMVs

Also from a commercial standpoint, has the network part proven to be an advantage, states Thomas Tucker, co-founder at the German SMV, PCT digital GmbH, who is a close networks partner.

– It has been valuable for us to be a part of this network across borders, especially because the network is built with such strong agents/operators and organizations working with caregiving in both Germany and Denmark. These areas will be determining for our business in the future, states Thomas Tucker.

Inspiration and deployment of opportunities across the border

The Care AI Network-project is based on a strong need for developing technologies for home care. The main purpose is to create a sustainable, interdisciplinary network across the Danish-German border. The network will promote knowledge exchange across borders and cooperation within artificial intelligence, home care, and organizational challenges.

Furthermore, the purpose of the project is to involve more national and international research institutions, home care organizations, and companies.

– The Care-AI Network, and the later project, will create mutual inspiration and learning across the Danish-German border. The Danish experiences with digital transformation and the many digital solutions, already used by the care sector, will be brought into play down across the border. Meanwhile, the strong competencies of the German businesses and research environment will play a role in digitalization and AI. This will provide a clear overview of the common needs and challenges regarding digital solutions in future home care, states international coordinator Karen Lindegaard, Danish Life Science Cluster.
